Alcohol and your weight loss diet

We all know that alcohol is not good for anyone following a weight-loss diet - alcohol is full of empty calories. If you are drinking most days it's also not doing a lot for your health.

That's around 380 kcals for the wine and anything from 360kcal to 700kcal for premier lager, and think how much quicker you could achieve your diet goal if you dropped those empty calories!

Low Calorie Cocktails

When you are drinking cocktails the mixer can make a big difference to the calories. If you choose a Diet Tonic or Soda and add just a splash of fresh juice it will cut the calories down. For example, you can save around 100 calories in a gin / vodka and tonic if you choose diet tonic and it still tastes pretty good! A rum and coke can easily be reduced in calories by opting for diet coke, you can drop even more calories if you choose tomato juice - a la Bloody Mary. Try our tasty recipes for low calorie cocktails:

Low Calorie Bloody Mary
140kcal (serves 1)
Tomato juice has less sugar than other fruit juices, so it's less calories and it's good for you - lots of vitamins and minerals. It's around 140 calories for a Bloody Mary with one measure of vodka, a dash of Tabasco sauce, tbsp lemon juice, dash of Worcester sauce and 150ml/5fl oz of tomato juice, salt and freshly ground pepper to taste - enjoy! Or drop even more calories with a Virgin Mary:

Even Lower Calorie Virgin Mary 30kcal (serves 2)
287 mls/1/2 pint tomato juice
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp Worcester sauce
dash Tabasco sauce
ice cubes
pepper to taste
pinch celery salt (optional)

Blend ingredients and add celery stick as garnish and stirrer.

Bucks Fizz

Use tall champagne flutes and put about 50ml of the dryest champagne you can find, and top up with around 100ml of freshly squeezed orange juice - it's enough booze to give the drink a kick and full of vitamins too!

  • Try topping up half a glass of wine with ice-cold soda water - it will hydrate you and help combat any headaches in the morning and cut the calories by half.
  • Replace the tonic and try vodka with calorie- free soda water, and add just a dash of lime(or for lower cals just add a slice of lime). Or mix vodka with a low calorie cranberry juice and top up with soda water.
